Most of Afton rests on Afton Mountain however there is some bucolic, rolling land at the base in the Rockfish Valley which is perfect for horses and raising vines.
Afton was built as a railroad depot for the C&O. It was also where Napoleon’s chief engineer, Claudius Crozet, performed one of the world’s most amazing engineering feats from 1850-1855: The Blue Ridge Tunnel (now a public park).
