The Local History of Covesville, Virginia

To truly appreciate Covesville, you must understand its roots. Officially established as a village in 1828, Covesville’s origins stretch back much further, to the 1740s, when Scotch-Irish and German immigrants from the Shenandoah Valley first settled this fertile “cove” nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The spiritual heart of this fledgling community was the Cove Meeting House, which quickly became a focal point and drew more settlers to the area.

By the late 18th century, Covesville had evolved into a village strategically located on the Charlottesville-to-Lynchburg stagecoach road, solidifying its role as a vital transportation hub.

During the 19th century, U.S. Route 29 followed the alignment of an old stagecoach route connecting Charlottesville and Lynchburg, Virginia. Stagecoach travel on the Charlottesville-Lynchburg route like other routes of the era, could be lengthy and arduous.

Stagecoaches generally traveled at about 5 miles per hour and covered roughly 60 to 70 miles per day. Given that the distance between Charlottesville and Lynchburg is about 70 miles, a stagecoach journey between the two cities would have likely taken at least one full day.

Travelers typically shared accommodations at inns along the route, with no guarantee of privacy or amenities beyond basic lodging and meals.

A stagecoach waybill from July 15, 1853, between Charlottesville and Lynchburg, lists passengers’ names, seats, places, and rates, according to The University of Virginia. The expansion of railroads gradually supplanted stagecoach travel in the mid-19th century.

By September 1850, a daily westbound train from Richmond reached Charlottesville by 2 P.M., where passengers could connect with a stagecoach line (C.R. Mason, J.L. Heiskell, and Wm. P. Farish & Co.) utilizing new fast line of “Troy Coaches” for their continued journeys westward.

The Charlottesville-Lynchburg stage route was ultimately discontinued in 1854 with the construction of the railroad through nearby Appomattox Depot.

However, the true boom for Covesville came after 1866 with the establishment of commercial apple orchards. This region became renowned for the highly popular Albemarle Pippin apple, and Covesville quickly emerged as one of Virginia’s most successful early apple operations.

This agricultural prosperity spurred significant growth in the village, leading to the construction of workers’ housing, a railroad depot, shipping sheds, apple packing and grader plants, cider mills, and various other industry-related resources. The profitability of these ventures also led to the construction of high-style residences, reflecting the newfound wealth in the community.

Today, the Covesville Historic District, encompassing the village and surrounding farmland, is recognized on both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places, a testament to its enduring historical significance. This rich history is woven into the fabric of the community and is evident in the charming, often historic Covesville VA homes for sale you’ll encounter.
