UVA Health: Getting Home Fast From the Main Campus
The UVA Health system is centered on the main medical campus in the heart of Charlottesville, and the neighborhoods that make the most sense for staff working there share a common thread: they put you within minutes of the action without sacrificing the residential peace you need when you are finally off duty.

Old Trail, located in Crozet about 15 miles west of downtown, has become one of my top recommendations for UVA Health professionals who want a true neighborhood feel.
Old Trail Village is well-planned and walkable within its own borders, and the Route 250 corridor gives you a predictable, low-stress commute into the medical campus. Old Trail also has townhomes.
Families love it for the access to strong schools and the outdoor lifestyle that Crozet provides with the Blue Ridge right in your backyard.
If you are a Charlottesville physician or nurse with a young family and you want space without chaos, Old Trail deserves a serious look.

West Leigh sits closer in, nestled between Barracks Road and Ivy Road on the western side of the city.
For UVA Health staff, this location is almost unbeatable in terms of raw proximity.
You are talking about a 5- to 8-minute drive to the main campus on most mornings, with established tree-lined streets and homes that have real character.
West Leigh is the kind of neighborhood where you decompress the moment you pull into the driveway.
It is not the flashiest Ivy neighborhood, but it is deeply livable, and for healthcare workers who just finished a 12-hour shift, livability wins every time.

Fry’s Spring is another favorite of mine for UVA Health employees.
Located just south of the UVA Grounds, this neighborhood keeps you close to work while placing you near Fry’s Spring Beach Club, a beloved community institution, and the forested trails of Azalea Park.
It draws a mixed crowd of university staff, young professionals, and long-term Charlottesville residents, and the Fry’s Spring neighborhood has a warmth to it that you will feel right away.
Fry’s Spring home prices here tend to be more attainable than some of the western neighborhoods, which matters a great deal for residents and fellows watching their budgets carefully.
Lewis Mountain rounds out my UVA Health recommendations.
Tucked between Rugby Road and the JPA corridor, Lewis Mountain is arguably the closest true residential neighborhood to the UVA Hospital.
Recently sold Lewis Mountain homes range from modest bungalows to larger, faculty-style residences, and the walkability to the UVA Grounds is a genuine selling point.
If you want to be close enough to make it back home during a long call day or get a workout in before early rounds, the Lewis Mountain neighborhood gives you that kind of access without requiring you to live in a condo.
Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital: Pantops and Beyond
Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital sits on Pantops Mountain on the eastern edge of Charlottesville, and the Pantops neighborhoods that serve its staff best are concentrated in that same eastern corridor.
The geography here is different from the UVA side of town.
You are working with a mix of established suburban communities and newer upscale developments, all of which offer remarkably short drives to the hospital.
Ashcroft is a premier residential community nestled on the mountainside in eastern Albemarle County, just minutes from the city of Charlottesville.
The Ashcroft Charlottesville neighborhood is renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views, offering residents vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Monticello, and the city skyline.
Spanning over 500 acres, the community emphasizes a connection with nature through its expansive hardwood forests and secluded homesites.
Here are 10 unique facts about the Ashcroft neighborhood:
Mountain Living: The community is situated in a majestic mountain setting that provides a sense of seclusion while remaining only ten minutes from the historic Charlottesville Downtown Mall.

If you want a genuine 5-minute commute to Sentara Martha Jefferson, living directly on Pantops at Claremont at Carriage Hill makes that a daily reality.
The area has an Anytime Fitness location that is open around the clock, which matters enormously for healthcare workers whose gym windows do not fall during normal business hours.
Grabbing a 6 a.m. workout before a 7:30 a.m. shift or an 11 p.m. session after an evening on the floor is not a fantasy if you live and work on Pantops.
